Thought For The Day – Friday 4th October 2024
Community
The word “community” is derived from the Latin “communitas” (meaning “the same”), which is itself derived from “communis”, which means “common, public, shared by all or many”.
This week, Miss. Butler has given inspirational assemblies on the theme of community in our school and beyond.
We see the importance of community at TBSHS, as we look after others, as well as ourselves.
We saw our wonderful community in action last Friday. Staff, students and parents all worked together, once again.
We saw community at House Rugby last Saturday.
We will see community this evening as the senior boys’ rugby team play at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club (another key local community organization).
We will see community next week at our Open Evening.
In fact, we see community every day.
In the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening.
On our journey to school.
On our journey home.
On our journey throughout life, and beyond.
Community is about everyone, by definition. No one is left behind.
Community is equality, diversity, inclusion.
Community is about respect, treating others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Community is compassion and empathy. Community is checking in on people.
Community also spreads far and wide, locally, nationally and internationally.
Community is about looking after our environment, as well as those in it.
“Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank” is an example of an organization which support people in our local community. We will once again be safely collecting for this charity at Harvest. Details will be shared next week.
Tomorrow is World Teachers’ Day. As well as students and parents, teachers, and all staff, play a leading, pivotal and vital role in education, of course. The theme for this day in 2024 is: “Valuing teachers’ voices: towards a new social contract for education”. This day celebrates the positive, passionate and powerful impact teachers make. They dedicate their professional and working lives to others. We take this important opportunity to massively thank, and show our appreciation for, all teachers, and all staff, past, present and future, at TBSHS, in our local area, across the U.K., and around the world. For we are a local, national and international or global community.
