Thought For The Day – Thursday 3rd October 2024
National Poetry Day
“Poetry is the extraordinary perception of the ordinary.” (Terry Heick)
“You can find poetry in your everyday life, your memory, in what people say on the bus, in the news, or just what’s in your heart.” (Carol Ann Duffy)
Happy National Poetry Day!
Thank you so much to the English and Library departments for all they do to inspirationally lead the way in the teaching of language, literature and poetry. At TBSHS, we have been blessed, and are blessed, to have wonderful departments, and leaders, in these areas. These areas are so vital for your and our past, present and future.
Whether it be in written, or spoken word, or song lyrics, poetry plays an important part in our lives.
In poetry, words are used with economy, emotion, meaning and power.
Analogies, ideas, metaphors, rhythms and symbols create memorable impact, as they do in life.
Poetry captures poignant moments and conveys profound meanings.
Poetry explores the depths of the soul.
There is a beauty to, and in, poetry.
Poetry teaches equality, diversity and inclusion.
In a world where there can be so and too many words, including in these daily messages, poetry directly, and indirectly; takes us to the heart of actions and creates the space for quiet meditation and reflection.
You never forget the poetry you learn at school.
Can you create a poem about our new school and “The Black and Gold Spirit”?
The English department are offering students in Years 7, 8 and 9 the opportunity to create a poem on the theme of nature, whether it be on the natural world, or human nature, on no more than one side of A4 paper by Friday 18th October. Please bring any entries to Mrs. Houghton in C27.
As ever, please make sure any work is your own. Your personal work, your distinctive voice, is so much more authentic and interesting, and has more integrity, than anything totally artificially created and generated. Credited research is one thing. Personalised writing, from your heart and soul, is another.
Do you.
Always be proud, and humble, of your life and work as an expression of you are.
