Thought For The Day: Wednesday 14th 2022
Deepest Respect
As broadcaster Huw Edwards said last evening: “Some of the most illuminating tributes come from the close family”:
“More than anything else, you learn by example. For her, whatever she felt, whatever difficulty, the Queen always went out and did what was required. And that does rub off. I shall never forget being with her on those marvellous occasions. All those moments are so special.”
(King Charles III, BBC News, 13th September 2022)
“I think the example that Queen Elizabeth II had from her father, as well as her mother, was absolutely crucial to her understanding of what being a Monarch actually meant. It was really about service, and her definition of service, that was a lifetime. Literally 24 7, 365 days of the year.”
(Princess Anne, Princess Royal, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, BBC News, 13th September 2022)
“The job is about being interested in people. The Queen had this extraordinary ability, always, to make you feel that you are the only person.”
(Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, son of Queen Elizabeth II, BBC News, 13th September 2022)
30th July 1966: “There was the Queen waiting for him (Bobby Moore) wearing a yellow hat, yellow coat and a pair of lilywhite gloves. He (Bobby Moore, the captain) wiped his hands on his shirt and shorts to clean off the dirt. Still he was worried by the grubbiness. He leaned forward and wiped his palms on the velvet covering at the front of the Royal Box . Manners maketh the man. Then England’s hero walked along the reception line, stopping in front of the Queen and the Jules Rimet (World Cup) Trophy. On meeting Moore before England’s opening game against Uruguay, the Queen had remarked on a red, white and blue floral display. “The right colours”, she said, “I hope they bring you luck.” Now the Queen brought things full circle. “They were the right colours after all”, she said and then she gave Moore the golden winged trophy . On he went down the line shaking hands with the Prime Minister and rest of the VIPs, there was protocol to be observed, before he raised the trophy high in his left hand. England World Champions.”
(Sports writer Matt Dickerson’s writing, read by broadcaster Adrian Durham last week)
31st July 2022: “My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women’s Football Championships. It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff. The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned. You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today.”
