Thought For The Day – Tuesday 18th June 2024
Elections Matter
Midnight tonight is the deadline for people of 18 years and above to register to vote at the 2024 General Election in the U.K.
Tomorrow, at 5 p.m., will be the deadline to apply to vote by post.
An election is choice expressed by expressing a preference or voting. Such a process is integral to democracy.
The vote is very precious. Suffragette Emily Davison, pictured above, died for the vote at the 1913 Derby horse race: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W_URTWjgR0
Campaigning, in person, via publications, manifestos (political programmes) and through the media, continues in the build-up to Election Day on July 4th.
On this day, and before through the post, registered voters in 650 areas or constituencies will vote for which Member of Parliament, and which political group or party, they wish to elect to serve, discuss, reflect, make laws and lead in the House of Commons, in the Houses of Parliament at Westminster, London.
The party with the largest number of Members of Parliament is afforded the opportunity by the Monarch to form a Government, with leader of this political becoming Prime Minister. For a majority, the key number is 326 Members of Parliament and above. Mathematics, as always, is key.
