Thought For The Day – Wednesday 18th January 2023

Coretta

In remembering Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Junior this week, we also pay tribute to Coretta Scott King.

Coretta, married to Martin, was, and became, an inspirational civil rights leader in her own right.  Coretta was also an author.

After suffering the sudden death of her husband, Coretta continued the legacy,  establishing The King Centre for Non-Violent Social Change and standing up for equality, looking after people around the world.

Coretta campaigned against racism and also for women’s rights, worker’s rights, LGBT+ rights, the rights of black people in South Africa.

Coretta founded MLK Day in 1983. The first MLK Day was in 1984.  Coretta walked and talked with people and Presidents.

Coretta, like Martin,  modelled the true meaning of resilience. She continued the legacy of love in dealing with loss.

Respected and honoured around the world, Coretta Scott King passed away in 2006. Over 14,000 people attended Coretta’s funeral.

The children of Coretta and Martin wonderfully continue their parents legacy today.
