Thought For The Day – Tuesday 28th February 2023
Be You, Be Us
The Black and Gold Spirit is about everyone.
The Black and Gold Spirit is about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. This is because this is right, good, moral and legal. This is because we should treat others as we wish to be treated. This is because together everyone achieves more. This is because everyone deserves respect, opportunity and care. This is because the equal, diverse and inclusive team is the best team.
As previously discussed, and studied in Citizenship lessons, February has been LGBT+ History Month in the U.K. This coincides with celebrating when Section 28 was abolished in 2003. Pride Month is celebrated in June.
Section 28 was a series of laws that prohibited or banned the “promotion of homosexuality” from 1988 to 2003. This included the work of schools.
In this outstanding BBC Newsround report from last week, BBC presenter Owain Wyn Evans returns to his former school to talk to a current student about Section 28 and the LGBT+ experience then and now.
This excellent report closes with the quote that people are beautiful just the way people are.
