Thought For The Day – Tuesday 21st February 2023
Shrove Tuesday
Today is Shrove Tuesday.
“Shrove” is derived from the old middle English word “shriven”. This referred to confessing and repenting (turning away from) sins.
Shrove Tuesday is a day of penitence. Penitence means showing sorrow, regret and asking for forgiveness.
Shove Tuesday is also a day of celebration.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before the Christian period of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, forty days where Christians get ready to remember The Suffering, Sacrifice, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ in Holy Week and at Easter.
Because Christians eat more simply or frugally in Lent, pancakes were made as a means to use up eggs, milk and sugar before the beginning of Lent.
At break time today, Interact will be selling food for Saint Michael’s Church, which will host our Lent and Easter Services in just over a month’s time.
