Thought For The Day – Tuesday 19th December 2023
Legends
As we finish this term well, we reflect on another wonderful last few weeks at TBSHS. This will all be recorded in another brilliant and bumper Christmas edition of “The Mitre”, meticulously compiled, from staff reports and student leadership and participation, by Mrs. Miles and Mrs. Radford.
In the next two days, at our Awards Evening for this calendar year tonight, and at our Final Assembly for this term tomorrow, we will celebrate the achievements of the school community in the brilliant last term and the epic last twelve months. We will pay tribute to former and current students, carers and parents, and former and current members of staff. It takes absolutely everyone. Every carer, parent, student and member of staff, current and former, is valued and vital. We pay special tribute to the leadership of the school.
At this time of year, we also remember Mr. Ian Wickens, who passed away three years ago. Mr. Wickens, a former member of staff, was a vital person in creating the ethos of the school. There was no finer servant of the school than Mr. Wickens, serving the school for an historic forty eight years, and epitomizing our values of commitment, aspiration, respect, integrity and community. In retirement, Mr. Wickens was always at Awards Evening, and was a key invigilator of practice and public examinations.
Mr. Wickens’ son, David, who passed away over five years ago, was an outstanding Head Student and person who also greatly excelled at Cambridge University. David Wickens was one of the truly great student leaders in the school’s history.
Those we love are always with us. They always inspire us.
Like us in our personal lives, we are very conscious of our legacy, and duty, to our past, to our roots, to our family and to our local community.
As Sir Isaac Newton said: “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”.
But we also always look forward.
Tomorrow, and today, is another day and another opportunity.
We walk our path with care, gratitude, humility, kindness and peace, thinking about our wellbeing and that of others .
We are very grateful indeed to those new members of staff and all the new students, carers and parents, mostly, of course, in Years 7 and 12, who have joined, and greatly enhanced, “The Black and Gold Spirit”.
Thank you very much for choosing us.
Thank you also to Year 11 for their very positive approach to the practice GCSE examinations. Thank you to the staff team who organise and invigilate examinations
In the picture above, taken last week, the sun rises on another day at TBSHS.
Thanks to all that came before, our best year is always…the next one.
