Thought For The Day – Friday 5th June 2026
World Environment Day
Today is World Environment Day.
On the 8th of May, the world, and indeed the environment, celebrated the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, the friend of nature.
King Charles III commenced the national event, broadcast globally, with a heartfelt letter, and message, passed to Sir David, very appropriately via the natural world: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/ce3pqvdl1zlo
Like Sir David, King Charles III has long been an advocate for care of the environment and sustainability.
At The Bishop’s Stortford High School, we are “Black, Gold, and Green”.
This is important for our present, our future, and the future of generations to come. For, in the challenges of the present, we should not forget the future. Our future. Their future. Treating others as we wish to be treated ourselves.
Today, the United Nations council us: “The planet is speaking. Rising seas, raging wildfires, heatwaves, melting glaciers. The climate crisis continues to drive devastating environmental, social, and economic impacts.”
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, calls on us: “This World Environment Day, warning signals are everywhere. This is the moment to act – for our environment and for our future.”
The theme of World Environment Day 2026 is: “Climate Action: Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
Environmental damage affects the most vulnerable. The most vulnerable humans. And the most vulnerable species. Equality, Biodiversity, and Inclusion.
Our precious earth is so finely and intricately balanced. We need everything, everyone, everywhere, everywhen, and, with respect, everyhow.
Peace and love. For all.
Are we listening to Mother Nature and Mother Science?
“This Bitter Earth” and “On The Nature of Daylight”, a beautiful and moving piece of music with vocals by Dinah Washington and classical music composed by Max Richter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW-XGr9uap4
