Middletown represents a town that could be anywhere and everywhere: it is both unremarkable and surprising. As Mrs Swanson arrives and meets the various townspeople, the audience experiences encounters that are simultaneously shocking, endearing and funny. Middletown asks some of life’s big questions such as ‘Why are we here?’ and ‘Is there more to life than this?’, but also treats audiences to slightly less hard-hitting queries such as ‘What should you do if you discover a meteorite?’ It contains a romance that isn’t a romance, outer space, endings and of course – new beginnings.
