Thought For The Day – Wednesday 31st January 2024
Green Football Weekend
This weekend sees the second ever “Green Football Weekend” in the U.K. This is being supported by national broadcasters.
As the name suggests, the aim of this weekend to draw attention to, and encourage positive action on, climate change.
It uses the positive platform of sport to inspire change.
Last year, “Green Football Weekend”, which we signposted in these messages and in Citizenship lessons, raised awareness on recycling, encouraging people not to use plastic bottles. Vegetarian, vegan and plant-based food was served. Supporters were encouraged not to drive, with walks and cycles to games and matches organized. Trees were planted. Coaches were powered with sustainable fuels and bio-fuels.
This year, there is a particular focus on vegetarian, vegan and plant-based food, whether that involves cooking a meal at home, or choosing this option at a match. The campaign states that: “If the UK’s football fans had one vegetarian, vegan and plant-based meal a day, we could save the equivalent to removing 5.5 million cars from the road, each year.” “Green Football Weekend” states that eating healthily impacts our health and performance, helps reduce injuries, improves recovery times, increases circulation and, vitally, helps protect our planet and our world.
