Thought For The Day – Wednesday 12th February 2025
Iconic
Very importantly, yesterday was the Tenth International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
To mark this very significant occasion, the Science Department at TBSHS took the brilliant and inspiring first photograph above.
A key focus of the day , report the United Nations, was, and is, closing the sex and gender gap in science.
This involves: breaking down barriers and conscious and unconscious biases to equality, diversity and inclusion; challenging stereotypes; celebrating, communicating and making visible inspiring herstories of the leadership of women and girls in science; encouraging and supporting female advancement and empowerment in science, and beyond.
In this “Be Black, Gold and Green Week”, nowhere is the contribution of women and girls to science seen more than in the response to climate and environmental challenges. Climate scientist Dr. Ella Gilbert clearly explains our task: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdOaNELFmQY
Moreover, in the recent global pandemic, women were at the absolute forefront of global leadership in science, health and medicine. Women, once again, led the response and met the challenge.
There are numerous other wonderful examples every day.
By empirically exploring the universe, and all in it, science benefits all. The leadership of women and girls in science enhances, and enriches, life, everyone and everything even further. It is not only their human right. It safeguards and inspires all other human rights.
We also take this opportunity to pay tribute to the invaluable work of women and girls in the equally essential (also broadly) scientific subjects of mathematics, psychology and the social sciences.
We also remember those who denied such opportunities globally, as we work towards, and upstand for, a world of fairness, justice and kindness, in person and on-line, for others, ourselves and our environment.
All negative prejudice and negative discrimination is illegal, unacceptable and wrong. It does not treat others as they, and we, would wish to be treated. It causes suffering. It affects personal and collective positive development and progress beyond words by excluding good, great and outstanding contributions.
We note that February is also LGBT+ History month.
Past, present and future, we at TBSHS are very inspired by, and very grateful to, the contribution of women and girls to science, and beyond.
We look forward to International Women’s Day on March 8th and Mothering Sunday on March 30th. The very appropriate theme of the former in 2025 is: “For all women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
The Bishop’s Stortford High School never was, never is and never will be “the boys’ high”.
The school was, is and always will be equal, diverse and inclusive.
