Thought For The Day – Monday 15th June 2026
Remembering Grenfell
We welcome back Year 7 students and Year 10 students to The Bishop’s Stortford High School after their wonderful opportunities of last week.
Year 8 students and Year 9 students also had brilliant experiences last week.
We continue to be mindful of, and grateful to, Year 11 and Year 13 students completing, and showing resilience in, their important external examinations.
After sitting their internal examinations last week, Year 12 have work experience this week.
Thank you to staff for always outstandingly nurturing all the above education, and to parents for their continued excellent support.
As we reflect on our lives, doing and giving our best, we continue to reflect on those locally, nationally, and internationally who experience challenges beyond words.
We pray for peace, and respect, in the world.
And we remember those who are, and would be, grateful for any positive opportunity.
We continue to reflect on all who care, love, respect, and support. Those who show compassion and put themselves in the shoes of others. The kindness of strangers.
Yesterday, Sunday 14th June, marked the nineth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy of 2017.
On a morning, nine years ago yesterday, people around the world woke up to pictures on news reports of Grenfell Tower, in North Kensington, London, on fire. The fire began just before 1:00 a.m..
Grenfell Tower was a tower of apartments or flats. It was a very well-known feature of the London cityscape.
72 people, including 18 children, lost their lives at Grenfell.
So many were, have been, and still are, traumatized beyond words.
Support and solidarity, as well as resilience, has been, and still is, needed.
Two days after the tragedy, in 2017, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince William, visited Grenfell to speak with: survivors; relatives of those who died; volunteers; and workers for the emergency services.
The word Grenfell is an adaptation of the words “green field“, the site of Grenfell, resulting in the colour green being chosen to symbolise this wonderful community.
The 2026 commemoration yesterday was the last before Grenfell Tower itself is fully demolished in 2027.
Bishop James Jones K.B.E., a former Bishop of Liverpool, who visited T.B.S.H.S., has worked with the families of the victims of, and those affected by, the tragedy.
