Thought For The Day – Monday 11th May 2026
Comfortable With The Uncomfortable
After Art, Languages and Drama examinations, not to mention coursework projects, led the way, once again, public examinations commence, in earnest, this week.
We send every good wish to students, at T.B.S.H.S., and beyond, sitting these external assessments.
Let’s go.
It is not an easy time.
But, we should remember that though, in some ways, examinations and qualifications are a memorable, and significant step on the journey of life, in the formal assessment of many topics across many papers, they are, in many respects, unique in life.
A wider life perspective, including of those who have to show particular, immense, and inspirational resilience locally, nationally and internationally, calms the soul, and helps, and motivates, the present moment.
Being a good person massively matters.
Routines such as sleep, breakfast, lunch, hydration, exercise, and fresh air, are an important healthy and holistic foundation and platform for students. In all the busyness, these should not be compromised on.
A character and attitude of students just aiming to give their best is a further vital pillar.
Everyone’s journey is different, special, and unique. Everyone’s journey is celebrated and valued.
With any large task, we break things down into smaller pieces, taking each question, examination, and day at a time.
Effective time management greatly helps. What students calmly and cooly look at in the days and hours before the examination will be used in the examination itself. In some respects, in the preparation, the examinations begin well before they actually begin.
Part of this is students playing their game, sticking to their process, and not being distracted, though appropriate balance, good humour, relaxation, rest, and support is equally essential.
Positive self-belief and humble reflection goes a very long way.
Some healthy nerves are natural and good. They show care.
“It is about patience and basics”, said the analyst before the rugby league semi-final on the “B.B.C. Two” commentary yesterday.
As well as bringing the correct equipment to examinations, including black pens, and being on time to those examinations, students must observe the regulations and rules of the examinations to the letter.
By definition, there will be challenges with examination questions. But these are positive for they show thinking.
If students remember the wise and professional advice and experience of staff, and what they have learnt throughout the years, showing to the examiners all they know, answering the questions in the process, and leaving everything on the paper, such challenges will be greatly met.
As in life, if one door closes, we work hard to open another.
Sport teaches us to play to the very last minute. And beyond. Showing respect during and at the end of the match and game. Students will be rewarded by using all the time available for each examination paper. Those last-minute additions and checks, through proofreading, can be the difference of levels as students line up to receive their results on Results Day in August when, without regret, students know they gave their all.
Our best is always good enough.
As always, thank you to carers, guardians, parents, families, and supporters. They are the unsung heroes of life, including at this very important time.
