Thought For The Day – Friday 28th June 2024
Community
We continue to welcome our sixth form guests today.
We hope our guests enjoy their Induction.
We pay tribute to them, their brilliant families, schools and communities for all they have achieved over many years.
We also thank all the wonderful students in our current Year 12 and Year 13.
For we are one world, one community.
One of the best aspects of Euro 2024 is learning about other cultures and nations.
19 of the 24 nations are actually represented by students at TBSHS.
We should be very proud of our personal cultural heritage and background.
But we also learn about, learn from and respect that of others.
Two memorable introductions to recent Euro 2024 matches from football commentator Clive Tyldesley, who visited us in March of this year:
“Down to the last 18, and Georgia are still at the European Championship finals. A nation with a population of just 4 million people, with a team ranked just above Oman and Guinea. 74 in the FIFA pecking order, but still at the party with Ronaldo and Mbappé and the cover faces of European football. It is difficult for us to comprehend what just being here, being on the main stage means to Georgia, and particularly Ukraine. Nations wrestling with far bigger issues and problems than balancing their midfields. It’s 11 o’clock at night in Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi, a city that has taken to the streets in its thousands to defend its basic democratic rights in recent months, and those streets will be filled with all night celebrations if their national team can stay in Germany… The final act of the drama of the Euro 24 group stages. Georgia need a win to win to stay in the land of the giants. The biggest giant at these finals captains Portugal against them.”
“It’s a “game of thrones”. The eye-catching fixture of the preliminary stages of these European finals. The only meeting of multi-champions in the group phase. Twelve years ago, they met in a group game and three weeks later Spain and Italy contested the final. It could happen again. The 13th tournament meeting in all. They contested that European final. They played out three major semi-finals. They have met in Brazil, in Boston, at Wembley, in Ukraine, in World Cup, Confederations Cup, Nations League, you name it. Their latest meeting is here in Gelsenkirchen with the right to go into the last sixteen as winners of Group B. That is what they are playing for. That is what the winners of this match will be rewarded by…This might just be a suspense story rather than an all action blockbuster. But what else is “on the box” tonight?”
