Thought For The Day – Friday 15th May 2026
Family
Today is the International Day of Families.
The United Nations theme for today, highlighting the importance of equality and support, is: “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing”.
Families are diverse, equal, and valued.
In alphabetical order: adopted; blended; cross-cultural; extended; fostered; nuclear; multi-generational; reconstituted; same-sex; single parent.
The original derivation of the word “family” is from the Latin “familia”, meaning “household” or those under the same roof.
We might also speak of a school, local, national, and global community family, living under an actual metaphorical canopy.
We hope, and act, for kindness, love, respect, and support being the heart of all families and all society.
All human families, in whatever context, have human opportunities.
But, also, human challenges.
And many have particular challenges.
Some of these challenges are beyond words.
Care, compassion, empathy, and understanding are required.
For our wider family of the environment and natural world too. Last Friday, the United Kingdom, and the World, celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.
Challenge and resilience through support is important.
We all live under, and in, the heart. The United Nations symbol for today, pictured above, is very appropriate.
Today we give thanks for all various families, at every level of society, at, and close to, home and beyond. whether people are with us today, or inspire and guide us from Heaven.
At a micro and macro level, we seek to create our own loving family communities in our lives, in the present, and in the future.
