Thought For The Day – Wednesday 10th June 2026
Work-Related Learning
This week, there are wonderful opportunities for students to pursue work-related learning.
Work-relating learning is central to our values at T.B.S.H.S.: commitment; aspiration; respect; integrity; community.
Whilst work-related learning further connects to the environment, equality, and resilience.
Today, thanks to the Miss. Todd and the Business and Economics department, there is a “Trading Day” for Year 9 students.
Tomorrow, thanks to Mrs. Jonas, and guest speakers, Year 8 students will experience a “Careers Day”.
Throughout this week, and next week, Year 10, and Year 12 students are, and will be, engaging in work experience placements, thanks to Mrs. Jonas and numerous employers.
When entering the world of employment experience, these students are being pro-active and professional, in substance, and style, representing themselves, their families, and T.B.S.H.S..
The same is true each day, including when we host guests.
The attitudes and skills learnt from all these fine opportunities are invaluable.
Over half-term, an important report was published by Alan Milburn, a former Government Secretary of State.
Mr. Milburn has long been an advocate for, and a leader in, the important area of social mobility.
Social mobility, by definition, is integral to commitment, aspiration, respect, integrity, and community.
The ground-breaking research from Mr. Milburn and his team, the main findings we studied in Year 9 and Year 10 Citizenship lessons last week, was called “Young People and Work”.
Regarding the scope of the report, young people were defined as those aged between16 and 24.
The comprehensive study highlighted the importance of work and work experience for young people, respectfully advising and warning wider society, and adults, that more education, employment, and training opportunities need created for all young people.
This both helps, includes, inspires, nurtures, and supports young people and wider society.
At The Bishop’s Stortford High School, we are very fortunate to have the above work-related learning opportunities. These build further on other wonderful events through the academic year. Of course, every lesson, and each extra-curricular activity and educational visit, is work-related learning.
We make the most of all these precious chances.
And thoughtfully help others in the process.
Caring about careers.
