Thought For The Day – Tuesday 19th November 2024
Use Your Platform
Last week was Anti-Bullying Week. The theme was: “Choose Respect”.
Every day is Anti-Bullying Day. Every day we must “Choose Respect”.
Research carried out in 2023 by the Anti-Bullying Alliance showed that almost 1 in 4 students reported being frequently bullied in the weeks before the study.
Last week, Manchester City and Portugal defender, and leader, Rúben Dias, like Year 12 last week and Year 10 this academic year, visited the Houses of Parliament: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z89h9ty

Rúben spoke at the House of Lords, after being appointed a patron for the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA), a charity and campaign group, initially founded by the NSPCC.
Rúben has not suffered bullying himself, but he has seen it in others. He is particularly concerned about on-line bullying and abuse.
“You can have all the power in the world, but if you do not know how to use it you are not as powerful as you could be. The word respect means a lot to me… I really appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the cause. As athletes, we have a platform to inspire and uplift, and it’s our responsibility to use it to stand against bullying in all its forms. Together, we can show young people that kindness and respect are the real signs of strength and the real path to success”, wonderfully said Rúben.
The Anti-Bullying Alliance said: “Rúben Dias’ involvement with the Anti-Bullying Alliance will not only shine a spotlight on the importance of kindness and respect but also reinforce the message that everyone has a role to play in ending bullying. His leadership, both on and off the field, will undoubtedly help create a safer and more inclusive environment for young people across the UK.”
The Anti-Bullying Alliance commended Rúben “for his commitment to teamwork and respect. His influence extends beyond his remarkable defensive skills; he is widely admired for his integrity, sportsmanship, and dedication to making a positive impact in the community.” The organization continued: “Rúben is lending his voice and platform to a cause that sadly affects millions of children across the UK. His involvement is expected to inspire many to embrace the principles of respect and inclusivity. Rúben’s leadership and commitment to respect both on and off the pitch make him an inspiring role model. With his support, we can amplify our message and encourage everyone to ‘Choose Respect’.”
Someone who has always used his platform to make things better for others for many years, and still does, is Brendon Batson OBE.
Today the school is very honoured to host Brendon Batson OBE.
Brendon Batson, who was also awarded an MBE, was a wonderful footballer with Arsenal, Cambridge United (where he was made captain) and West Bromwich Albion. Brendon was the first black player to play for Arsenal. At West Brom, Brendon was one of the famed and iconic “Three Degrees”, with Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham. Their statue, in West Brom, is below. Brendon is in the centre.
Brendon had to show a resilience and courage beyond words against racism suffered.
Brendon was part of the “Windrush generation”, so important in our country’s history.
After his career was ended through injury, Brendon became a very influential leader of the Professional Footballer’s Association and was a massively inspirational person in various campaigns against racism.
Brendon has always used his platform for others and continues to do so.
We are and should be massively inspired by all who use their platform to make the world a better place for others.
We aim to do likewise.
