Thought For The Day – Thursday 8th January 2026
Aspiration
Aspiration is, of course, one of the values of The Bishop’s Stortford High School.
In this new year, aspiration is an appropriate value to reflect upon, in a school facility that itself epitomises aspiration.
The word “aspiration” has its origins in the Latin word “aspirare”, which literally means” to breathe toward”.
Over time, the meaning of this word evolved from a literal breath to, more figuratively and symbolically, a strong desire, goal, or striving towards or for something.
It is always important to keep our positive aspirations, both personal and collective, in mind.
These aspirations will be based on our identity, our moral character and distinctive gifts, both who we are, and who we wish to be, for everyone’s identity is unique.
For sure, aspirations are grounded in reality but hope and idealism, allied with hard work, is integral to concept.
Dream the dream, and make the dream a reality.
When times are challenging, aspiration can be very significantly tested. But that is precisely when the love of aspiration is most needed. Both for ourselves and others.
Aspiration shines a light, paints a picture, and sees a vision.
And all our lights, pictures and visions are different and related.
There are many former, and current, students who are following, aspiring to, “breathing toward”, their goals and dreams.
One of those is George Hoddle. George signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with Cambridge United, a highly respected professional football club, over the holidays.
This was very fitting reward for George’s play in the heart of midfield, which also saw him win the “player of the month” award for his club, who are making great progress this season.
Just like he was a student at The Bishop’s Stortford High School, on and off the field, George continues to be an outstanding role model: hard working; humble; creative; and skilful.
Part of aspiration is, of course, not just thinking about what we wish to do, but who we wish to be. This is called Character and Virtue Ethics.
What are our aspirations and goals for the new year and term and indeed for our life?
What do we want to do? Who do we want to be?
Our decisions reflect our character. We are not perfect and always humbly learning.
But, doing, and giving, our best, we “breathe toward” our aspirations and, even more importantly, help others “breathe toward” their aspirations.
“I just want to play as much as I can and try and help the team”, said George Hoddle, pictured below, over the holidays.
