Thought For The Day – Friday 1st May 2026
Diversity and Unity, Unity and Diversity
In an historic meeting on Monday of this week, Dame Sarah Mullally, the first woman Archbishop of Canterbury, met Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the Catholic Church, in Rome.
They talked, and prayed, together.
This followed King Charles III and Pope Leo praying together in October. That occasion, pictured above, in the second picture, was the first time a British monarch had prayed at a public service with the head of the Catholic Church since the Reformation of the 16th century.
The meeting between Pope Leo and Archbishop Sarah Mullally was also as remarkable as it was symbolic. Though there are always different and diverse views in any organisation, one denomination allows, encourages, and supports women Archbishops, Bishops, Ministers, Priests, and Vicars. Whilst the other denomination sees anti-sexism, equality, and vocation being advocated, expressed, and led differently, but equally importantly.
But the common challenges of the world transcend differences.
In an address following her meeting with Pope Leo, Archbishop Sarah said they were both united in global hope, justice, peace, and prayer.
Archbishop Sarah Mullally said that, in our challenging world:
“We must keep telling a more hopeful story: that every human life has infinite value because we are precious children of God; that the human family is called to live as sisters and brothers. We must therefore work together for the common good — always building bridges, never walls.”
Inviting Pope Leo to visit the United Kingdom, Archbishop Sarah praised Pope Leo’s hopeful, just, and peaceful leadership.
Diversity and Unity.
Unity and Diversity.
People can still hold appropriate, and different, beliefs, integrities, perspectives, and views, and still, respectfully, live, love, talk, and work together.
Learning about each other.
Learning from each other.
Please have a good, healthy, and safe, Bank Holiday weekend, when it arrives. Thank you for the beginning you have made to the final term of the academic year.
Very best wishes to those Year 11 and Year 13 students balancing important revision, relaxation, and rest in the coming days.
