Thought For The Day – Wednesday 14th January 2026
Do And Give The Extra
At school, and in life, we do not do the minimum.
We do, and give, the extra.
In our studies, we do, and give, the extra.
We add those extra sentences, paragraphs, and pages.
We do, and ask, those extra questions.
We consult those extra sources and do that extra research.
We read those extra books.
We have those extra learning conversations.
We undertake that extra revision.
We plan, and do, those extra past paper questions.
We seek, and give, that extra guidance and help from, and to, others.
We get involved in the positive plethora of wonderful extra-curricular activities found here: https://sway.cloud.microsoft/s0tbXJSMrA96AGAJ
These activities are led by staff doing, and giving, the extra.
They are attended by students doing, and giving, the extra.
We all encourage others to do, and give, the extra. We reach out to others. We reach out ourselves.
A metaphorical saying attributed to Jesus, and the origin of the phrase “going the extra mile”, is: “If someone asks you to walk one mile, go two”.
We do, and give, the extra side-by-side and step-by-step.
Doing, and giving, the extra is vital to our holistic balance, health, and wellbeing, and that of others.
Though, doing, and giving the extra, is not about always keeping going, though there are many occasions where this is the case. True resilience is far deeper than that. Doing, and giving, the extra may also mean to take that extra care, both of ourselves and others. Giving ourselves, and others, that extra attention, belief, care, check, compassion, forgiveness, love, reflection, time, and thought.
Doing the minimum is a risk. What if we do not reach that minimum? “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars,” said Norman Vincent Peale,
Doing, giving, the extra is certainly integral to the values of aspiration and commitment.
But doing, and giving, the extra is also essential to the values of respect, integrity, and community.
And doing, and giving, the extra means when we rest, we know we have done, and given, our all.
