National Youth Orchestra place for Evan
Talented Clarinettist Evan, Joins NYO
A year 13 student at The Bishop’s Stortford High School has been offered a place with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
Evan, who began learning the Clarinet around seven years old, was an associate with the orchestra last year, but in September he auditioned with candidates from across the UK, to win one of seven places the woodwind section.
Evan began learning at Northgate Primary School and reached Grade 8 towards the end of Year 10. In Year 7 at TBSHS he took up the saxophone for fun. And was a finalist in the TBSHS Music Festival in March.
Studying A-Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Music, Evan is hoping to go to Oxford next year to study Maths – ‘whilst doing lots of music on the side.’
Evan’s first meet with the Orchestra which is made up of young people aged 13-19 will be in October half term with residential weeks in the holidays. His first formal concert will be at the Barbican on the 4th January. He will also be lucky enough to perform with the Orchestra at the BBC Proms next summer.
Evan is thrilled to be offered the seat and looking forward to the amazing opportunities with an orchestra which has been said to be one of the best youth orchestras in the world.
Subject leader for Music at TBSHS Joe Emery, added “ Evan has been a remarkably committed and high-performing member of the music department for the past 6 years. His outstanding musical ability is matched only by his dedication, resilience and commitment both to his personal musical development, and that of the music department. To have now gained entry to one of the most esteemed youth orchestras in the world, is a quite brilliant achievement and one that we are incredibly proud of him for. I would encourage as many of our students as possible to take advantage of the free tickets for under 19s that the NYO provides, and to go and see Evan in action with the orchestra at one of their upcoming concerts.”
