Thought For The Day – Tuesday 22nd April 2025
Caring For People And Planet
We hope you had a good, and safe, holiday.
Our first “Final Assembly” in the Sports Hall at Beaumont Avenue at the close of last term inspired us to think about what our positive contribution can, and should, be.
Our positive action, in and around school and the community, starts today.
Good luck to students preparing for, and sitting, examinations in the coming days, weeks and months. Give and do your best. Look after others and yourself.
Central to our, and indeed any, values is the care, and respect, for people and the planet.
Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, from Argentina, who passed away from this life yesterday, exemplified such values in caring for others and the environment. Inspired by Jesus Christ, this “Pope of the People” was compassionate, forgiving, humble, kind, loving, peaceful and thoughtful. He reached out to all, especially the vulnerable, including in the last week of his earthly life, which was most appropriately Holy Week in Christianity. Our thoughts are with Catholic Christians at this time, and with Christians, and all around the world generally, who looked to Pope Francis’ leadership and service.
Today, 22nd April, is the 55th “World Earth Day”. The theme for 2025 is: “Our Power, Our Planet”. Thank you to “The Green Team” at T.B.S.H.S. for all they do to lead our “Black, Gold and Green” values of sustainability, which we all follow.
Today is also “National Stephen Lawrence Day”. Stephen, an 18-year-old student, was murdered in a racist attack in London on the 22nd April 1993. His mother, father and brother have campaigned for justice ever since. Stephen’s passing from this life changed society and changed laws. Just a few years after her son’s murder, Doreen, now Baroness, Lawrence, very kindly visited T.B.S.H.S., showing the greatest resilience and inspiration. Baroness Lawrence donated a book about Stephen, which we, of course, still have, and treasure, today. Stephen wanted to be an architect. Today, “The Stephen Lawrence Foundation” campaigns on the absolutely vital themes of classroom, community and careers.
How will you, and we, make the world a better place this term and beyond?
