Thought For The Day – Friday 26th September 2025
Language and Society
Languages week concludes today, the European Day of Languages.
Yesterday’s date in five different languages was:
Hungarian: 2025. szeptember huszonötödikén, csütörtökön
Basque: 2025eko irailaren hogeita bostean, osteguna
Sicilian: Giovedì vinticincu di sittèmmiru 2025
Swahili: Alhamisi tarehe ishirini na tano ya Septemba 2025
Zulu: ULwesine mhla zingama-25 kuSepthemba 2025
The quotes above are from the 20th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who spent a significant amount of his career in Cambridge.
In his life, Ludwig Wittgenstein completely changed his philosophy to convey the contextual, and social, dimension and significance of language.
This promoted understanding of, and empathy for, community and social meaning.
“Meaning is use”, said Wittgenstein.
The phrase “The Black and Gold Spirit”, is deep and meaningful for us in our community, for example.
This ethos will certainly be in evidence at House Rugby tomorrow, on the day of an historic Women’s Rugby Union World Cup Final between Canada and England.
Thank you to all leading, participating in and organising House Rugby at Jobbers Wood.
