Mock Bar Trial
The Bar Mock Trial Competition helps young people understand how the law touches every aspect of their lives, gaining an insight into how the legal justice system works.
TBSHS, led by Mr Conquest (Subject Leader of Politics), has participated in the Young Citizens Bar Mock Trial Competition for several years. Initially competing virtually due to the pandemic, we later transitioned to face-to-face trials at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where we performed commendably against experienced competition. Although we did not place, our students spent the following year honing their advocacy skills during Sixth Form Enrichment sessions, significantly improving their outcomes and achieving third place at the Ipswich Crown Court Regional Competition.
Ahead of the competition, we receive access to resources, including specially written criminal cases, to help us prepare legal arguments. After preparation, we go head-to-head with other schools to prosecute and defend these cases. Winning teams then compete in a National Final. Students who participate are encouraged to think critically, build arguments, and boost their confidence. By interacting with legal professionals, the competition helps develop employability skills and provides a sound understanding of the role of law and the justice system in our society.
