Medical Society
The Bishop’s Stortford High School’s Medical Society (MedSoc) is a sixth form society, led by Year 13 students for Year 12 students hoping to become doctors, dentists, vets and other healthcare professionals.
We run weekly sessions where we: discuss current medical-related hot topics, explain the admissions process for medicine and more.
We have had a productive start to this year’s MedSoc. So far, we have covered: the options beyond medical school, the admissions tests for medical school as well as several current news items such as the use of deep-brain stimulation to treat depression and the impact of the recent fuel shortages on healthcare workers and their patients.
We have also hosted an ex-TBSHS student over zoom where he talked about his experiences of first year at Kent & Medway Medical School. This was informative and gave all in attendance a good insight into what life as a medical student is like.
The society is a good place to practice important skills like speaking to others about specialist subjects and forming an opinion on complex issues like physician assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. Working through these skills in a relaxed yet formal environment provides valuable experience for interviews.
