Thought For The Day – Wednesday 18th June 2025
World Refugee Week
This week is the 27th World Refugee Week. Friday is World Refugee Day.
The 1951 Refugee Convention of the United Nations provides the international legal definition of a refugee. A refugee is a person who has been forced to flee their country due to a well-founded fear of persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations.
The United Nations Refugee Agency reports that 1 in every 67 people on earth have had to flee their homes. As of the end of June 2024, there were an estimated 122.6 million people displaced globally by conflict, persecution and human rights violations.
Locally, nationally and internationally, abuse, conflict, climate change, exploitation, illness, injustice, neglect, poverty and violence are challenges beyond words.
The theme for Refugee Week 2025 is “Community as a Superpower”.
This wonderful theme highlights the positive power of communities to give empathy, empowerment, encouragement, help, healing, solidarity and support.
This wonderful theme highlights the importance of compassion, love, kindness and respect.
For in our most challenging times, we should have, we must have and we do have each other.
And challenges for others are… challenges for ourselves.
We walk the journey together.
For Community is all our “Superpower”.
