Thought For The Day – Thursday 5th June 2025
World Environment Day
Every year, the 5th of June is World Environment Day.
The theme this year is: “Together we can beat plastic pollution”.
This is an important opportunity to reflect on how we care for our local, national, global and international environment.
And why we should, and must, do so.
What steps do we take to be part of the positive solution?
We celebrate the “Black, Gold and Green” ethos of T.B.S.H.S., even more structurally integral at, and to, Beaumont Avenue.
“The Green Team”, led by Mr. Dickens and Mr. Harvey, continue to inspirationally lead the way at T.B.S.H.S., supported by the Environmental Science, Geography, Library and Science Departments at the School.
Everyone plays their part. In so many areas of T.B.S.H.S. The Caretaking and Catering Departments, for example.
We pay tribute to the work of Mr. Reeve, staff and students, current and former, over the last few years, in leading Sustainability at the School.
We know we must humbly keep improving.
From a religious and spiritual perspective, the late Pope Francis talked about the holy importance of what he believed was our God-given Environment. The former Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, Bishop James Jones K.B.E., who visited the School in November, and has lived out Fairness, Justice and Truth in his life and ministry, has also advocated such sacred sustainability for many years. The beautiful cover of Bishop Jones’ far-sighted 2003 book is visible below.
All faiths, religions and spiritualities teach Environmental care.
In all the many, and plethora of, global issues that there are in this world, the Environment is such a vital foundation.
For without the Environment, there is no life on this earth.
Nature is the stage and the arena without which there is no performance.
In their many challenges, the generations who came before, selflessly sacrificed and suffered for our future.
Similarly, we ensure our children, and our children’s children, have a happy, healthy, holistic, just, kind and peaceful environment.
A care and compassion for the Environment requires us to think of others and think of the future.
It is a test of, and for, our Citizenship.
