TBSHS Year 11 Pianist, Tailin Liu Advances to National Final
Bishop’s Stortford High School Year 11 student, Tailin Liu, a talented pianist, has won the East of England regional heat of the Rotary Young Musician competition, and will now compete in the National Final on the 25th April.
Tailin’s performance repertoire includes works such as Elegy by Sergei Rachmaninov and pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, showcasing both technical skill and expressive depth.
Along with his younger brother, Tailin entered the Bishop’s Stortford Rotary Club Young Musician competition last April and won the title. Following this success, he progressed to the district round held at Brentwood Cathedral on 28th February 2026 before winning the regional (East of England) round on the 21st March at St. Mary’s Church in Hitchin.
Tailin has now advanced to the National Final on the 25th April, to be held at The Grange Theatre in Hartford, where he will compete among the country’s most promising young musicians.
Having begun learning the piano at the age of six and after passing Grade 1, due to COVID restrictions he self-taught until he achieved Grade 8 distinction in 2022. Since then, he has studied with Chenying Li and is currently working towards his ABRSM diploma, which he hopes to complete later this year.
Tailin is planning on staying at TBSHS next year to take A Levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths, however with his continued dedication and passion for music, Tailin Liu is certainly a young artist to watch.
Subject Leader for Music, Joe Emery commented “Tailin has been studying the piano for the last nine years and we are delighted to see him gain the success he rightly deserves by winning the Rotary regional competition against tough opposition. To combine this with the challenges of studying for Year 11 GCSEs is no easy feat, and we as a school wish him every good wish for the National Final in April.”
