Assessment Outline

At the end of year 13 there are 3 exam papers, each lasting 2 hours.

Paper 1 – UK Politics: Political Participation: democracy and political participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media. Core Political Ideas: conservatism, liberalism, socialism.

Paper 2 – UK Government:  the constitution, parliament, Prime-Minister and executive, relationships between the branches. Non Core Political ideas: one from the following: anarchism, ecologism, feminism, multiculturalism, feminism, nationalism.

Paper 3 – US Politics: the US Constitution, and federalism, US Congress, US Presidency, US Supreme Court and civil rights, democracy and participation, comparative theories.


Each unit is 331/3 % of the qualification.

The exams will measure how students have achieved the following assessment objectives.

AO1: Knowledge and Understanding

AO2: Analysis

AO3: Evaluation

Key Skills in this task

Politics students need to do more independent reading which can then be used as part of an assessment.

Bridging Task

Task Outline

Following the EU referendum, to what extent does UK political sovereignty lie with Westminster?


Assignment: Written piece of between 600 words.

Format: Word processed

Research: You are to carry out individual research and produce an original piece of writing. You must also include a bibliography that references all the sources of information you have used (and contains actual books, not just reference to Wikipedia). You can use academic texts and arguments being discussed by contemporary politicians and in the media.

Marking Criteria / Assessment Method

Your work will be collected by your teacher in your first week of lessons.
