Ski Trip 2019

Dear Parent/Carer,

During the February half-term holiday of 2019 I am planning to take a group of current year 8 to 12 students on a ski trip to the resort of Obertauern in Austria - http://www.obertauern.com/en.html. The village of Obertauern sits at an altitude of 1750m above sea level, with its ski resort offering 100km of pistes for all abilities, a modern lift system, and skiing at an altitude of between 1630m and 2313m above sea level. It is Austria’s only purpose built ski resort and, due to its altitude, it has an outstanding snow record, with skiing being able to take place at the resort between November and May.

The proposed accommodation is the Felseralm hotel - http://www.felseralm.at/en/index.html The hotel is located in a spectacular secluded setting at an altitude of 1650m above sea level. It has been recently renovated and is well maintained, sleeping a total of 280 people, accommodating students in 4-6 bedded rooms, all with ensuite facilities. The hotel’s on site leisure facilities include tenpin bowling lanes, sports hall, table tennis room, multimedia entertainment rooms, climbing wall, shop, curling rink as well as a tobogganing track.

The mode of travel will be executive coach. We will depart from school on Friday afternoon (15/02/19) and return on the following Saturday afternoon (23/02/19). Accurate timings have yet to be arranged.

The approximate price of the ski trip is £1034. This includes:

Comprehensive winter sports insurance cover
Coach travel to and from the resort and use of the coach in the resort
Return channel crossings
Six day lift pass
Six days hire of carving skis, poles, boots and helmet
Six days tuition with six fully qualified instructors for five hours per day
Six nights full board hotel accommodation (including packed lunches)
5 Euros towards breakfast on the homeward journey
A range of evening activities
STI Skiwise representative
Snow guarantee

The cost does not include:

Spending money
Dry ski slope lessons for beginners (cost tbc)
Hire or purchase of any ski clothing for the trip
Meals during journeys

As with many other sports, skiing does involve a certain degree of risk of injury.

Students will only ski under the supervision of qualified instructors, or with a member of school staff holding the Snowsport England ASCL (Alpine Snowsport Course Leader) qualification. At all other times, students will be reasonably supervised by the accompanying staff to a level that would be expected of a prudent parent, in line with our legal duties of being in loco parentis to students whilst on school trips. To ensure this, we intend to take 6 staff on the trip to provide adequate supervision.

The cost figure for the trip covers all associated costs with the organisation of the trip, including the aforementioned fully comprehensive winter sports travel insurance. This policy includes enforced cancellation (subject to deduction of an excess). You must tell us about all serious or long-term illnesses for your son/daughter and anyone else in the family whose health might affect his/her own ability to participate in the tour, in order that we may advise the insurers.

In line with school policy, you should be aware that should funds remain at the end of the tour amounting to less than £30 or 10% of the tour cost per head, they will be put into the school account for the benefit of all pupils. If funds remaining amount to more than this, a choice of reimbursement to parents will be offered. Where the tour costs exceed the budget due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. change of travel plans, exchange rate variation etc.), parents may be asked for a further contribution.

Please note that if an incident or incidents occur where your son’s/daughter’s behaviour becomes incompatible with inclusion on the trip, or is excluded from school for any period, the school reserves the right to withdraw a student from the tour at any stage. Should this situation come about, and incur a cost to the school, this will be borne by the parents in all cases.

In order to secure a place, I require a non-refundable deposit of £100 by Monday 16th October 2017. If the ski trip is over-subscribed students will be chosen at random. The reply slip and deposit payment is to be taken to Mrs Kitching, Trips and Visits Coordinator. Please write your son’s/daughter’s name and "Ski Trip 2019" on the reverse side of the cheque. A payment schedule (usually spread over 10 months) will be sent to you once a place on the trip has been confirmed. If your son/daughter is not on the initial ski trip list (limit of 43 students) he/she will be placed on a reserve list and the cheque will be returned to you.

If you require any further information then please contact me at the school. My email address is jonathan.griffiths@tbshs.org

Yours sincerely

Mr J.P. Griffiths
