TBSHS 6th Former Laura Skinner has won the regional round of the Miss Dance competition and is through to the National Finals in Blackpool in June.

Laura, who has been dancing since she was four years old, started with ballet, tap and modern dance but now dances every genre - Ballet, Tap, Modern, Musical Theatre, Classical Greek and Contemporary Dance.

Laura has attended several dance schools over the years but currently attends Morgan Asloff in partnership with local dance school Jacqui Ison, in Enfield.

Her schedule is very demanding, as in addition to her A Level studies in English Language, Art and Film Studies, Laura trains four times a week with competitions roughly every other weekend.

There are dance festivals (Competitions) most weekends, overseen by the IDTA Dance organisation as well as the All England Dance competition every two years.

Laura also dances with a partner and a group. Her tap group came 2nd in the Dance World Cup in the Senior Tap Group category last year at the World Cup Finals in Barcelona.

For the Miss Dance competition Laura did a 3 minute piece and her routine included a lyrical section, a fast section and a 'Queen of the Night' section. The marks are out of 100 and Laura scored 91 which is incredibly high as 80+ is a distinction and 86 is the standard qualifying mark for the All England competition.

Laura's dance teachers are both former winners of the Miss Dance competition so she is in good hands.

Fortunately, the final on the 9th June is the day after Laura's last A level exam, so she is looking forward to going to Blackpool for the competition.

Laura says "I love the thrill of dancing, it is such an accomplished feeling. I love the fun of the performance."

After leaving school, Laura hopes to carry on dancing and would like to follow a career in visual marketing.

Mr Stark, Head of 6th Form commented "Laura joined us at the start of Year 12 and always been interested in Dance as an extracurricular pursuit outside of school. In school, she has had a fantastic impact on our fundraising group – Interact - and has helped organise our student led variety show – Showcase – which were all great successes. Her recent achievements in Dance are absolutely fantastic and testament to her dedication and talent."
