Oxbridge Latest and University Round-Up

Three talented girls from The Bishop’s Stortford High School have proved this week that they are ahead of the crowd, securing offers of coveted places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Sixth formers Sara Dalzell and Millie Mitchell have offers of a place, subject to A Level results this year, whilst Katie Thompson has a confirmed place as she already has her A levels which she took last summer.

Sara has been offered a place at Mansfield College, Oxford to read history and Head Girl Millie has been offered a place at Jesus College, Cambridge to study architecture. Katie Thompson, who took her A Levels last summer and is currently in the middle of her gap year, has secured a confirmed place at Magdalene College in Cambridge to read Psychological and Behavioural Sciences.

The achievements of these talented students are not only academic: Millie is Head Girl and Sara is Deputy Head Girl and in addition to their wide ranging responsibilities as senior pupils, both are very busy organising events.

Sara has just completed a very impressive Extended Project titled - To what extent should the Holocaust be viewed as the product of historic anti-Semitism?

Katie is working as a PA to the Chairman and Co-Founder of P&A Wood, a local classic Rolls Royce Motor Car Dealer, at the moment, which is a challenge she is hugely enjoying, before taking up her confirmed place in October.

In addition to the Oxbridge offers, the School has a range of Year 13 students who should also be congratulated for already holding a total of 174 offers from top universities (with 45 - mainly courses at Durham, Bristol and Imperial - still to reply).  Many of these offers are for highly competitive courses with grade requirements equal to, or approaching those, of Oxbridge, e.g. Engineering at Durham, Bristol, Nottingham, Southampton and Birmingham; Natural Sciences at Durham; Chemistry at Imperial; Mathematics at Southampton, Computer Science at Bristol; History at Exeter and London School of Economics; Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Nottingham; Economics at Bristol.  Our five TBSHS medical/veterinary applicants have already accrued an impressive 12 interviews between them and we wish them success in converting these to offers.

Fiona Price, TBSHS Oxbridge Co-ordinator, commented, “The students have worked exceptionally hard to gain these offers and have been well supported by staff and external speakers who have provided many enrichment opportunities to develop their academic ability. We are very proud of their achievements. We wish our students all the best in obtaining the grades required to secure their places.”

Rob Stark, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form said, "It is a privilege to be part of such a highly successful and vibrant Sixth Form. The students never cease to amaze me with their ability to go above and beyond expectations and the same is true for our dedicated staff. I am very proud of Millie’s, Sara’s and Katie’s achievements.

Millie, as our Head Girl, and Sara, as one of our Deputy Head Girls, have both flourished as members of our Senior Prefect Team. Katie finished her A-Levels last summer and her recent Oxbridge success is a culmination of two years of hard work in our Sixth Form."
